Just my opinion . . . .
The External Breather System using a Catch Can/Cleanable Filter concept is somewhat flawed. Lets look at the crankcase air/oil mixture that is expelled from the engine. Some basic science first. What is heavier, air or oil? Air rises and oil being heavier than air flows down. If the External Breather System routs the line up over the top of the engine, under the seat and drops down under the swing-arm the air portion of the vented pressure goes up and exits under the bike to atmosphere. Since the oil is heavier it stays in the engine. No Catch Can/Filter needed. That System on my 2007 Dyna and my Wife's 2004 XLH1200C does not expel any oil from the breather hose.

When riding enough to get the oil fully hot (210-230 F) the oil will atomize and pass out with the air, or get caught in the filter or catch-can.

If you don't route up and over (which most people don't) then it will drop down into the catch-can or filter, even if not fully warmed up.

In NO instance does the oil gravity feed back into the engine with the rest of the oil. There is a cavity, after the umbrella valves, where the breather bolts thread into, that is separate from the rest of the engine. The most that will happen is it will drop back into there before the bike is ridden again and gotten up to operating temperature, for it to make it's way to the catch-can or filter.

In the following video there is a diagram showing how the oil is routed and how once it gets past the umbrella valves it cannot get back in the engine proper.
