Default Valve Stem Seal ID

I'm rebuilding a set of 1992 XL 883 heads and got a bit stumped on the valve stem seals. My Cometic kit has seals with the numbers 109 and 39. The seals that came off the heads are 19 and 81. The manual does not mention a difference, and simply states to "install seals until they bottom out on the valve collar." I tried that with the new seals and they won't bottom out.

I have a James Gaskets Valve Stem Seal - JGI-18001-83-A on order. It checks out to replace 18001-83B (the only part number listed for all the seals on the microfiche). The kit states "Contains 2 Intake and 2 exhaust valves stem seals." but makes no mention of which goes where, or any other numbers.

Problem is that I did not note the placement of the old seals when I pulled them off. Live and learn. So, anyone have some insight? Or is this a matter for the calipers?

diff mfg's will use diff numbers. the seals should fit any position.

do the seals look different?? is the sealing edge orange or black rubber, does it have a teflon ring where it contacts the valve.. there are several variations of the seal.
the intake seal is a softer material and the exhaust ids normally a higher temp silicon based seal and sometimes is a harder material some use the same material for both. the main thing i can say is check the papers that come with them it should specify which is which unless it's obvious.. but then again this is the age of the internet and you-tube.

These are the James Gasket Viton Valve Stem Seals. They're all blue in color. Don't seem to be able to post an image yet, my account was reset a ways back, probably not enough posts. This link should work though: Image

They came in the top end Cometic box, no literature attached. I'm hoping the new ones on order will have some information. Can't seem to find anything online about the difference for these specific ones and their stamped numbers. I understand about the difference for exhaust and intake considering the different heat cycles.

I've honestly never thought so much about valve stem seals, or had any issue installing them in the past. I'll post an update when I get the order next week.

just looking you may have two different size stem sizes on intake and exhaust usually intake is just slightly smaller. but the steel collars are probably the same where they fit onto the guide. easy to check just measure the stems and then whichever is smaller try the seals on them to see which fits tighter.

Makes sense. That's pretty much the plan—measure and see what fits best. I see that the seals are offered on a range, for example 5/16 valve stem, with 0.420 guide, or 0.500 guide, and so on... I don't know the motor history, so lots of variables. It may have had the valve guides done at some point.

On the plus side. I thought it was an 883, that's what the seller stated. Turns out it's a 1200 with Wiseco pistons and in really good shape. Nice surprise when I opened it up.

I'll post an update once the seals arrive next week.

Here is a quick update for anyone looking at this down the line. I got my James Gaskets Valve Stem Seal - JGI-18001-83-A order today. Each seal has a different number on them (21. 123, 40, 13), So as bustert stated above, "diff mfg's will use diff numbers," these might well be lot numbers, but they seem to be of no consequence.

An important note. The James Gasket installation instructions are different than the service manual. I don't know if these seals are different than the OEM ones, but it look likes everything is straight forward and good to go now.
