Default 04 Roadster problems

None. Just get rid of the stock suspension pieces, jet the carbs right, keep up regular maintenance, and this bike will last at least 100,000 miles.

I've had a failing battery that almost stranded me but my 07 with 9,454 miles has been very dependable when I do ride it. Funny thing is, I bought it on a whim in 2011 pulled into Boston Harley Davidson one day just driving by and ended up buying it before I left.

Since then I've had six other bikes I've added to my collection all unique that I bought thinking I'll keep this forever and just recently I sold three bikes to try something new.

The HD is still here after all the buys and sells and with no intentions to let it go. Love the Sportster it's a cool easy to ride bike, there's something guttural about it that a lot of brands don't come close to.

But yeah it's always been dependable

I've had mine since 2009 and a few years ago it started ok but run like crap and kept on cutting out. A new battery was all it needed. When it was still new, the imobiliser thingy failed and one of the exhaust pipe header bolts fell out as did one of the engine brace bolts. Since then it has been as good as gold (touch wood).

I've had mine over two years and about 10K miles with no problems except tires and a battery.

Well 3yrs same month and almost the same dayit happens again. Come to find out they made the crank position sensor to long and the fix was to space it out by .035 from the case by washer(s). So I replaced it myself $65.00 dollars and some time flushing the oil system i have had no other problems. Not sure when harley may have corrected this but if you have a 04 and later you ,might want to ask.

This is the first time I’ve herd or read about this issue with the crank position sensor being to long and needing a spacer. I have a 2016 iron myself . I’m wondering if anyone has any more information on this type of problem and what year or years sportsters were or are plagued by this issue? Anyone have any more info on this at all??? Please share as it could help people out in the future. Thank you Roug_04 for posting this issue and your experience.

I have an 81 AMF sportster, the carb was a bit tacky but after I replaced that, no problems. works fine.

I've had my 81 since new and have had no major problems and one small problem was caused by me from putting an aftermarket coil on when there was no problem with the factory unit.
