Chuck mentioned a comparison of spacers and their potential so I'll share the

small amount of anecdotal evidence that I have. In racing it's almost always

anecdotal because we don't have time to do research , only development .

A 1" spacer with an 1 7/8" early carb on a ported manifold and well ported

head with port volume designed for a large engine will show a 5 cfm @ 10" water

gain on the flow bench. i never found an air flow increase beyond the 1" length

although I have seen performance gains on some combinations up to 1 3/8".

I feel that's an issue of plenum volume which will be very specific to engine

displacement and cam timing. My 89" motor with lienweber L-6's and my

96" motor with redshift 625's liked different things.

The airflow gain I have always felt was simply the air stream having a

little more distance to calm down and get running straight after the

trauma of splitting around the butterfly and shaft. The air needs to settle

back down before it can turn the corner into the port .

The big manifold -small carb setup does much the same thing only

using a different principle.

Thanks for adding the spacer information.

I'm not surprised there is little gain after an inch.

As you and others instructed me: add something when the bike tells you it needs it not cause it looks cool.

The HP formula = .43 hp per cfm x number of cylinders.

.43 x 5cfm x 2 cyl's. = 4.3 hp

So, if I follow correctly:
1) Get 1-7/8 carb ($$$)
2) Restore carb ($$)
3) Manifold and spacer ($)
4) Port heads ($$$)

That done -- I can realize 4.3hp for about . . . $$$$$$$$$ on top of the $$$$$$$$$ we already spent building a stroker.

I wonder if anyone is going to catch on to this aspect of the "romance"

The only thing cheap on the list is the spacer!

The increase of 5 cfm is from adding the spacer to an existing early 1 7/8 carb ,etc.

so getting 4 hp from a spacer is a good trade for your $$$. About as good as it

gets actually.

Default Early carb on ebay right now

Buy it now 250$ imo it's butchered s&s ,the "g" and serial numbers are ground off and it's got some old flakey chrome on it listing says missing some parts I can see the needle and seat are gone more than likely the bowls empty good luck finding that stuff and I'd imagine when they chromed it they needed to remove the chrome from the inside of the throttle shaft bores so who knows what kind of butchery is going on there?
