Default Hamburger drum brake clunk noise

Hi,

I'm running a hamburger front drum brake, and it has a weird problem. Whenever I stop on a hill facing uphill (ie, I apply the brake and the bike rolls backwards a bit) - when I take off and next apply the brake, there's a delay about 0.5 sec, and then a THUNK that feels like the forks being hit sideways from inside the hub. After that, it brakes as normal.

At first I thought it felt like something was rolling backwards inside the hub when I braked on the hill, and when the brake is applied going in the opposite direction at speed, it pulls whatever it is back into place with a thunk?? But the internals of the brake seem secure, they don't seem to be able to rotate.

Now I've found that the wheel bearing on the plate side is xxxxed.. It has maybe 400 miles on it since I built the hub with brand new bearings (the other one is fine).

So the bearing on the plate side is taking a hammering, perhaps related to the thunk?

The bearings and axle are 3/4", but the spacer ID is a bit bigger than 3/4"... Only thing that's obviously a bit iffy? It seems to still sit on the inner race, not the retainer.. but it can move on the axle up and down. Pics attached show how much play it has. It still sits on the race even thought it doesn't look like it from the photo.

Forks are 35mm, with a stay I made that goes to the fender mount on the fork. Bike is a 1979 shovel, but I figured some ironhead owners would have experience with the trials and tribulations of the hamburger brake.

I'm going to make a new spacer the correct ID this weekend. I know it's a shit brake etc etc.. but has anyone had this problem and solved it?

Can you take a pic of the brake stay arm? Please try to include the anchor point on leg, the axle and the anchor point on drum assy.

The stay is a chunk of mild steel. I have a cap screw that goes through the fender mount, and into the smaller hole on the stay, which is threaded. There's also a steel sleeve inside the mount hole, to keep the screw in there tight.

You'll see from the pic from the back of stay that there's a gap at the bottom between the stay and the fender mount, but at the top it's tight.

When the axle is tight with the spacers in, there's no play rotationally, or forwards & back (ie, I can't pull the plate away from the hub, or push it toward it).

I got nothing on this one my friend except a guess
Looks like your using the 79-81 lower legs and mounting to the lower caliper pin bolt boss. I thought you were going to the much further up fender mount, creating an over center scenario. It’s a shame the other caliper boss appears to have been removed. If I was to guess, rolling back, under braking the adapter is rotating some making the distances from axle center -retaining bolt -pivot longer. This would put stress on your bearing. Can you apply brake and roll back to observe any movement?
I would think triangulating the mounting bracket with the now removed upper boss would eliminate that.

Thanks Mike, that's a decent guess! Yeah it's a shame the other boss is gone.. the legs were shaved when I got the front end.

I'll replace the bearing spacer and the bearing, put it back together and see if I can see anything moving. Cheers

+1. The mushrooming on the bottom of that bracket seems to show that the bracket is rotating, and with the bolts being tight, it probably has enough resistance to where once it rolls back it needs for the brake to be applied to get it to rotate forward. You could see how much movement there is if you loosen the bolts a tad and try rocking it forward and back with your hand.
