Default Steering bearings question

Hey guys, 92 xlh 1200 with 35k, having trouble finding the source of this rattling, bbs-in-a-can sound. Not the primary chain or adjuster, not the brake caliper or pads I don't think... it sounds like it's certainly coming from the front of the bike... I'm wondering, do steering head bearings make that kind of noise when they're failing?

The bike steers perfectly fine, brakes good tho squeals a bit sometimes...cannot imagine where the heck this noise is coming from. ....going on 2 weeks now and it is, or was getting louder. No other symptoms...just a rattling from the front and not affected by gear or rpms. Only quiet at very low speed.

Thanks for any thoughts you can share ... I realize diagnosing noises on a forum is a bit tough!

Gas cap? The chrome cover loosens up, common issue.
Or pinging from too low octane gas?

Jack the bike up and check wheel bearing/head races.
Go round with the spanners and check everything you can think of including fuel tank.
Exhaust baffles rattling? Broken spokes? Best of luck finding it.

Thanks u guys, all good suggestions I will use them. Exhaust, could be....not the gas cap, definitely lower down on the bike. Seems like something real stupid I forgot to tighten or otherwise funked up somehow. But I do need to check the bearings throughout. Had the bike 3 years now and I know I never serviced them, wheel or steering. So it's def time to check then out at least.
Thanks again!

X2,

The gas cap and gas tank are notorious for rattling on these bikes. It doesn't seem like it's coming from there either. Press on the cap and then put pressure on the tank when it's making the noise to rule it out.

Clamps for heat shields will do that also.
Always check the stupid and easy things first. ;-)

thanks I'm def going to try the gas cap diagnosis...be checking the heat shields as well. At this point I'll try anything. The way it rattles now it seems like something is going to fall off... Hopefully by Sunday I'll have posted the answer.
Thanks again you guys.
