Tech Tip #312 - 6/15/07 - Quote: 2004-2007 Sportster Oil Capacity - Service literature for 2004-2007 XL models incorrectly lists oil capacity as 3.6 quarts (3.4 liters). The correct amount listed should be 2.8 quarts (2.65 liters). Oil capacities listed are approximately the amount required to bring the fluid level near the full mark on the dipstick. Service Note: Be aware that the dipstick has a Full mark to indicate the highest level of oil that should be installed in a hot engine and an Add mark to indicate the lowest level of oil in a cold engine. The engine is designed to operate correctly with the oil level in the range between these two marks. While it is most important to not overfill the system, it is acceptable to operate the motorcycle with the oil level anywhere in the range between the Full and Add marks. 64) (This may be oil change only without the filter.)

I really appreciate the help.

Just an update:

I was able to find the source of the original short, the speedometer. I dis-assembled the speedo but was unable to find any obvious signs of shorting. Once I disconnected from the harness the bike stopped blowing the batt fuse.

I went through the car and it was pretty clean. A little tarnish but I was able to clear it all with carb cleaner and flushed all orafices. I replaced it and the bike is ready to try and start. I plan on cranking it this afternoon, then doing the oil change. Fingers crossed!

Is there a thread on acceptable oils and filters I should read before asking? I asked the dealer but he simply avoided the question. $78 each oil change is pretty hefty.

There are so many "oil threads" on here, it borders on ridiculous. I say buy what's affordable, and you are comfortable with, and what's easily and readily available. When you've decided on what you'd like to use, read up on it, on the internet. If it sounds good, use it.

I used Castrol in 14/17 bikes.
The exceptions were Motoul 10W60 in the 2016 Moto Guzzi and H-D 360 in both Sportsters.
The H-D 360 was available and priced competitive at the local dealers.
Otherwise I would have used Castrol in the Sportsters.

Good points by Toejam...any major brand, the appropriate weight for local temperatures and suitable API rating.

I was able to crank the bike up. Thought I had a bigger problem at first as I forgot to hookup the vacuum line to the petcock, but once I figured that out and primed the carb, the bike started and idled. The bike really didn't puke oil everwhere however. Ill run it some more today before changing the oil.

Whats the MoCo? (I'm a newb) and when you say Combo unit do you mean the dual guage setup or the guage that has the small tach in the lower right? I saw some like that and didnt think they would fit the 4" mount.
