93 sportster when throttling up shuts off?
Just finished a lighting problem with the bike and the help I received was awesome.
I'm running into a problem that is truly befuddling...here's the background on the bike.
I purchased from a young guy who knew nothing about Harleys but he always wanted one and bought this 93/XL 883. It was supposedly converted to a 1200 but I haven't tried to verify.
Said bike was running good bought gas and it wouldn't restart. I thought maybe bad gas to I drained the tank..refilled with fresh gas and made sure the petcock flowed properly.
Id like o point out that I bought the bike in Nov 2021 I've never driven the bike until this week.
I started the bike and it stalled out while trying to get the engine warmed out. About the third time I hit the starter button nothing happened. Lights were on and did not dim and I thumbed the starter button. Service manual says check the circuit breakers. For the inexpensive cost I just replaced the ignition and lighting circuit breakers. Everything seemed fine so I had a buddy come over and follow me on my maiden ride. I warmed up the motor rode up the street . Waited at the traffic light went through shifted into second gear accelerated and WHAM engine shut off. Coasted to a stop. Thumbed starter button and nothing just like before I installed new Circuit Breakers.
I actually pushed the Sporty about 1/16th of a mile uphill. I know doesn't sound like much but at 71 it was a PITA. I coasted back down my street waved at the neighbors told them it was an electric mc think they bought it until they saw me pushing it up my drive.
I think I have two problems one electrical and one possibly fuel starvation. I say this because I had a tank bang covering my non harley gas cap plus found that I did not put the vent line back on the tank.
I think the relay could be at fault or possibly starter? Truly looking for someone a whole lot smarter than me.
I thought I'd be ready for this Fridays Relaibility Rally but it looks (unless a miracle happens) that I'll lose my $300 entrance fee .
So if you think you might have a suggestion lease let me know. Thanks Wardie

If not the right tank cap, at least run it slightly loose so it can vent and prevent vapor lock (just for testing & use only 1/2 or 1/4 tank of fuel).
This Sportsterpedia section has lots of info about grounding:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/techtalk:evo:elec01
Remember that this year most often uses device grounding thru a local connection to a frame point. However, there are two harness-like ground wires that connect to the frame below battery & brake hose clamp. They include grounds for:
Starter Relay
Turn Signal Canceller
Ignition Module
Horn
Be sure these ground wires are clean & tight.
The Starter Relay is near the circuit breakers, under the seat. Early '93 is mounted on the frame. Late '93 is mounted on an electrical plate with the circuit breakers.

crazy thing is that the bike will start after you let it set for a while. I replaced both ignition and lighting CB's.
I wonder about a vaccuum lock but have external fuel filter coming from tank to carb and it was full.
The bike is exhibiting the same symptoms as before... I'll have to start checking voltage to see whats up. I did install a new front brake light switch .
She acts light a bad CB but new ones have been installed. What a PITA this bike has become

Just because there is fuel in the filter doesn't mean it is not a vent issue.
Do the loose gas cap as IXL2Relax mentioned.
You changed the brake light switch in the handle bar controls?
Check to make sure you didn't pinch a wire in there.

I would say it's vapor locking, too. Take an air hose and blow the vents out, in the cap. If it's vapor locking, then it won't let the fuel flow fast enough to keep the carb bowl full.

Not knowing what mods "hardtail" include... loose the inline filter, look into an upgraded ignition setup https://www.denniskirk.com/search/19...mmy/ignition.q

Checked the gas cap it doesn't have a vent but the bottom of the gas tank has a vent. I'll blow air through the tank vent t make sure its open
My biggest concern is when the bike shut down thumbing the starter button yielded no crankin, no clicking and the lights never dimmed? I'll pull the battery and take it for a load test.
Today I went out and hit the starter button at least ten times and every time she turned over?
I'll start with the battery and use the FSM procedures for testing. Really appreciate al the help here. Just not sure after replacing the ignition and light circuit breakers why the bike would exhibit a no start similar to bad CB?

Intermittent problems can be maddening. Did you check your diagnostics for codes? Being intermittent they may not show?
