The 440s are considerably better than the 412s. They've been replaced with the 444s but can still be found pretty cheap as NOS. I got lucky at an online store, nosoemparts, that's actually located 40 miles from me.

I'm leaning toward either the Progressive 412 or 430 along with the Progressive front fork springs. I'm also considering going longer than stock on the rear. What sort of difference in performance might I expect between the progressive 11" and 12" shocks? Are there any other issues to consider?

Go with the longest shock possible that you are comfortable with..the extra length allows for better dampening response. I had probably 150,000 miles on a couple sets of 440’s, two bikes, and found them to be some of my best experience at the time,(60 year’s plus on two wheels). I now have about 170,000 miles on the 444’s and they are superior in every way. Do keep in mind that if you do a lot of miles that the lifetime warranty on the upper level shocks is a big plus, paying postage one way to Progressive and having completely refurbished shocks returned to you does spread the higher initial cost out a bit. The 412’, I believe, are only warrantied for a year. My last set of 440’s, sent in for reconditioning were really worn out, I received a brand new pair of the 444’s back in return. That was stepping up to the plate on Progressives part.
