I've never ridden an 883 but, like boomerguy, I can get my 1200 to scream thru the twisties, too, I just never really get out of 2nd gear.

My riding buddy has a 1200 Custom with the taller skinny wheel & tire and he has no trouble at all with the turns or the speed. It always sounds to me like he is lugging the engine but that's OK, he is having a ball. He usually refers to these rides as, "nice and leisurely". I don't know if he's serious or just yanking my chain but he is definitely enjoying his ride.

My 883 Standard has the smaller wider front tire and mid-controls which is what I grew up on and love. He started riding late in life and has only ridden what he has now (also a rubber mount) and wouldn't consider changing. Doesn't matter...we're both having fun and our coffee stops. We call ourselves, "Wheezer" and "Geezer", the Sons of Geritol gang.

I wonder if anyone, on the forum, has pumped up the horsepower/torque on an 883 without converting it to a 1200/1250/1275. I'd be curious to know how much HP/Tq they gained.

i think with cams... ported heads... etc... you can gain a 20 hp... but IMO is cheaper increase the bore...

Once you feel the torque of the 1200 bore you will be glad you did it. No 883 will pull like a 1200!

There is a fairly new hardback/"coffee table" book about the history of the Sportster. The author talks about his 883 that he rode as stock until it needed some work at 45K miles. He had the 1200 conversion kit done to it but left the original smaller valves in it. He preferred this combination because he said it gave more low-end torque and less high-end speed. This is exactly what I plan to do when my 883 needs some major work done.
I don't care about the interstate but I love the mountain twisties. The higher low-end torque combined with the shorter gears of the 883 will make a "stump-pulling" monster.

That may have been true at one point but I'm skeptical today. With the rubbermount bikes the 1200 models got the Buell spec heads and hotter cams. With the EFI bikes the 883s got the same cams though they still would benefit from the head swap.

Still 20 would put them in 1200 territory and I've never seen a Dyno on an 883 that matched a 1200.
