If you want fat, buy a Big Twin. On Ironhead Sportsters, thin is in...

If it ain't broke, don't fix it (especially if you don't know what you're doing). Most Sportster problems are owner-induced.

You can spend a bunch of money trying to make a XL into a BT. But in the end you just wind up with a butchered XL and an empty wallet.

They don't call me Ironhead Rick just because I'm hard headed

Yes i know that, of course the big twin is more expensive, but I joked about this. I like the sportter more in appearance, but a bigger tank would fit that too

Big Twins are not really more expensive. It might cost more on the buy-in.

Most Ironheads will bleed your wallet dry unpatching the patches rebuilding the trans generator & regulator, etc.

Old BT's share some of the issues bad brakes and previous owners transgressions.

A one piece gas tank will always be lighter than a 2 piece of the same volume if made from the same material. But I don't think you can get a bolt on one piece tank for an ironhead that's bigger than 4 us gallons.

And yes a smaller tank will have a better weight distribution than a bigger one. But I for one find it really annoying to have to stop so often to refuel the smaller tanks. Also if, like me, you travel in areas where gas stations are few and far between, you are better off with the biggest fuel tank you can find.

I don't think there is any practical use for a fat tire on an ironhead.

Here is what shovelhead style split 5 gallon fatbobs look like on an ironhead:

I'll have to dig a bit deeper in my photos to find the mounting bracket

hello again, i found this on the website. originally a 3.9gal gastank

https://www.motorcyclespecifications...dster-1982-85/

I thought that the ironhead is always used ”peanut” tank(2gal), but there are other models with different tanks, likes XLT 1000(sporsters mixed super glide?) XLX and Of course XLCR...

Always liked the K model style tank that was used on early Ironheads & the turtle tank that came after. V twin make a repop of the K model style but don't think turtle tanks are being remade

Hello northmotor, another Finn here

I have an ’83 XLS1000 ”Roadster” and it has an FXR style tank from the factory. 4 gallons I think (11 litres for us metric folks) and I honestly don’t think it looks bad at all. I have fitted a CV carb, and it is a little bit tight fit with the cables but other than that, no problem.

Here’s a pic. From the distance it looks pretty much like the one in the 1983 sales brochure, except for the decal and colour scheme. I haven’t seen one exactly like this anywhere else.
