Default Breaking in a 17-year-old demo

Hello all - new member, first post, first Harley, etc.

I had a half-semi-sorta-serious Sportster fund that just got real in a hurry. I just picked up a 2002 Roadster with 750 miles on the clock. Yes. 750 miles.

This model is one of the few I think Harley got right the first time: twin discs up front, mid controls and somewhat taller shocks - and none of them had been swapped out; the bike is completely stock. The price was more than I had in the Sportster fund, but still a great deal, so I had to dig into the retirement fund, but as a neighbour pointed out, I can always just work a little longer before I retire.

Big surprise: my old Yamaha XS650 vibrated a lot more than this so-called paint shaker. No problem at all, so far.

Anyway: since I'm essentially still breaking this bike in, and since there's no tachometer, what speeds should I be keeping this to for the next little while? Going through the gears, what should max speed be throughout?

Also, not sure how I'm going to calculate miles per gallon or tank, as there's no trip meter that I can see. Bare-bones Sportster owners, do you just keep a mental note of the odometer setting each time you fill up?

Thanks in advance.

The trip meter on mine is the button at the back of the speedometer, press one time to show the trip meter and double click for the mileage.

Welcome to the forum.

Good score! My "older" 1200 will go 50 miles on a gallon of premium (no corn liquor) at modest highway speeds. That pleases me. My older Goldwing 1000 only got 30 mpg.

Great buy you got there, may need a battery and tires at the very least. Oh, and welcome to the forum family from a swamp in Michigan.

Howdy and Welcome from North Dakota!... Like "rejeanprimeau" said there is a rubber covered reset button on the back of the speedo. It should cycle thru 1-2 trip-meters and the odometer. If you have the "Owner's Manual" just follow the 'break-in, riding rules"
1st-25mph, 2nd-35mph, 3rd-50mph, 4th- 60mph, 5th-70mph. for about 500 miles. You may want to give it an oil & filter change and change the primary after the next 100 miles you put on it.
