Default 1970 - AntiG Batt and CE Gen vs Kick+Magneto

Hi XLForum

Longtime reading and looking on here, and just re-registered. I'd really appreciate some help, as a little lost on the technicals.

I'm building a 1970 to be a kind of XLR-esque lookalike.

I now need to decide whether to keep it kick only with magneto, or go new Antig batt and cycle electric gen?

Everything I read on the forums say, if it is set up for electric keep it - bike has the electric start. Is it that bad? The mag is fixed but I've got the manual retard kit from Morris. However, I do like my knees :-) so if it is that bad then I'm not that macho needing to keep kick only.

On the electric start --- i can't find a clear answer? Will and 8 cell work or do I need a 12 cell? Plus, do I need to buy the full ($$$) CE gen or just the part you bolt on to the end? Last question, is will a antig be small enough to hide away under a 'fake' p-pad on the rear fender (yes, i've got the original 14 3/4 shocks, plenty of room, can't hide in oil tank as running a GasBox tank - it's awesome?!).

I'll try and get some pics, as I really want to finish this build in the next month.

Thanks for any help!
K

I've got a '71 iron head and it has both kick and electric start. On the days you're feeling macho, kick is the way but it's also nice to be able to just reach down and push the button.
Make sure your battery and charging system are compatible. I was looking seriously at LIon until someone let me know that LIon batteries don't like generator charging systems. I ended up with a Yuasa AGM battery and have had good service out of it.

Even if you run the mag, youre still going to want a Cycle Electric generator. You want the low output version since it's only powering the lights.

I run an AntiGravity batter on my electric start 74. You need the 12 cell. Get a complete Cycle Electric generator with built in regulator. I havent had a problem using it to charge my CE battery. It small, but I dont think its small enough to hide under a P pad. You might be able to make a box and mount it on top of the swing arm in front of the rear tire.
