I was stationed w/ a guy who brought his Honda shadow over from the US. It would cost him about 2000USD to get through the Shaken then he had to pay the fee for registration which was about 300USD. I had bought my Sporty from the base dealer when I was stationed there. His isues were the brakes and the exhaust. Ensure you have a stock exhaust or it ver well may not pass the Shaken. Also check out gaijinriders.com It is a group of ex pats from all over the world that ride together(most are English speakers.). A great bunch of guys. And most ride sport bike. I reckon they would be the best on trying to get you the info you need. Let us know what happens.

not a gov't employee?
Chuck, I take it that you don't work for the US gov't? I've never been stationed in Japan, but all the other places they've sent me, I've mostly been able to drag my US spec vehicles with me at the expense of my employer and they usually have deals with the foreign gov't so that most US spec vehicles would pass inspection, etc.
