Was your 1st bike a Sportster?

1976 xlch, stock. Purchased in 1976, 2 years outa high school. Man, best day ever. Harley Harley Harley! No other sound, from the V-twin to the "clunk" of the transmission. Not to mention the 'feel' of torque!!!

Ok I lied on the survey my first "street bike" was a black 1975 XLCH Sportster. It was brand spanking new off the showroom floor at Harley Davidson of San Antonio, Texas. I had just turned 16. I had worked in the oil field 2 summers to get the money.

first was a 1966 305 scrambler bought in 1972 running on one cylinder, fixed it, all rice burners until 5 years ago when i got my 1997 hugger 883 along with a new leftover cb 1100 classic, real chrome fenders, then a 1998 sportster 1200s last week, 3 bikes in the garage, liked every one of them, leaning toward sportsters right now, they fit me good, older are lighter and easier for my tired old body to muscle around.like carburetors with a petcock and accurate reserve fuel.

Mine was a 1976 SS Harley 250, bought it in 1980 for the princely sum of £90.

It was black with that S shaped rainbow decal on the tank.

I loved that bike, it was fantastic. Wish I still had it.

Technically it was my first street bike. A 75, probably my favorite. Now I've gone back to a sportster.

First Motorcycle; 2001 Yamaha YZ80, it was for my 11th or 12th birthday. 2 stroke scared the hell out of me.

Got used to it after a while, jumped from that bike to a yz250 smoker @ 14, rode that for over a decade. Finally sold it after doing a full down-to-frame rebuild w/revalved suspension and still the chassis felt "off". Always had a random high speed wobble that couldn't be resolved, even with $1,500 in multiple suspension revalve's, new wheels, all new bearings etc. This was an '06 SSS bike btw.

It always had headshake that couldn't be tuned out. Was also tired of dirtbike maintenance. Just trying to think how many times I changed the air-filter and cleaned the chain over a 10+ year period makes me cringe. Good memories but the days of going out riding with buds every weekend in the dirt are over for sure. Gas used to be $1.90 and you could do a 450f top end (including valves) in your garage for $450. In these times $450 will get you a piston, rings, and a head/base gasket and that's about it. Forget the valves.


First streetbike; SV650. Have probably owned 20+ streetbike's until moving towards Harley mainly out of business interest. A ton of people want to build their Sportster, not necessarily their GSXR. My '94 sportster was my first Harley.

I'm fully bit by the v-twin bug. My goal is to continue to build custom bikes until I either can't or I'm dead.

Just had to comment at how gorgeous your bike is.

To the topic: No my first bike was not a Sportster, it was a 1994(same year I was born) Yamaha Virago 750. Put a lot of miles on that bike within 4 years while I had my Sportster. Good bike.

Nope. I’ve had many many bikes since 1968, but there’s a 2007 XL1200R in the garage now keeping the ‘72 Norton Commando company.
