So just got back from 3rd ride after it initially happened. I've never again heard the chain sound again. When I do turn the throttle while in 4th, it makes almost a lighter version of a car's fan barely hitting metal ( that's the only analogy I can think of, sorry). I did take it up a steep hill down the street but, starting at about 5mph already in 3rd and already at steep point.. accelerated swiftly till the point of bogging down, and no slippage out of gear (3 times up and down the hill). I've had a pretty good bit of input now, thank you very much everyone. To all that have read these lines and suggestions.. does anything sound more likely than the others (going by my symptoms). I have no idea where to start.

How fast on the speedometer are you moving when trying to accelerate in 4th? You should be well above 50mph before hitting up high gear.

Decipher The difference of not shifting Into fourth from being in fourth ( under load ) and the feeling of slipping out of 4th gear, that was my 68 H issue, the clutch gear dogs were badly rounded off , but the poster here also stated the sound of Metal Rubbing, I’d Pull the Trans

Probably not abovev50mph but, I'm not sure, I don't have a speedometer. I have always had to shift a little premature into fourth as when I would shift into 4th at the normal rpm one would shift.. the clutch would grind a bit. So since I've had my bike (about 1.5 years) I would always shift at that exact same ever-so-premature point. I am just praying that it is not the transmission which I guess, is what a "deepdive" is referring to? I don't know.. I have received a plethora of possible answers and responses, which I am extremely thankful and grateful for, but still have no real concrete direction in which to start. I was thinking that my last post that described the sound emitted when throttling in 4th, might help someone out there with more knowledge than myself, be pointed into a more certain direction? I'm really pretty broken up about it. I absolutely love my bike and am in the garage about every single night just trying to take care of it and upkeep the best that I know how. But I am terrified about it being a transmission issue.

Hardtail28 if what you are feeling is the same as described above the replacement of the clutch gear is not as bad as say a transmission overhaul.
To get to the clutch gear however will require some removal but clutch gears
themselves range in price from crap at 15 to good OEM at 120 to best Andrews 210. PS don't buy crap!

In regards to Monte03, I was originally in 4th, going up that same steep hill and running it kind of harder to see what my bikes response would be. I continued to ride down the road slower in 4th, and then got to a straight section where I opened it up in 4th. I rode for about maybe 4 to 6 seconds and then it felt like an intake boot became really loose.then it just I think made a chain not catching sound and would not accelerate until I put it into a lower gear.i got home. Then I immediately took it out again and it would easily shift into and out of all gears including 4th, it just won't accel at all in 4th. I have never again out of the 3 rides I took after, heard the chain sound again but.. I do hear a kind of car fan hitting metal. With a lite contact kind of sound every single time it is now in 4th and I'm giving it throttle. One of the members said that,"I may have sheared the keys" or bent a fork.. I don't know, I'm hoping someone will read these lines and something that I wrote symptoms wise will click with them and they will just maybe know. I'm admittedly lost and truly upset by this.

You may in fact have two problems.

The one that worried me is the "fan hitting metal" sound that only occurs in 4th. The concern here is that what your hearing is dogs catching on a too close gear.

This could be very serious if that's the case. The last think you want is a locked up gearbox spitting teeth.

If the bike accelerates normally in the lower gears but 4th produces rev increases but not faster progress it's probably just a slipping clutch. Most other problems would show up as coughs. spits etc and would most likely occur in 3rd when accelerating hard as well.

If that fan hitting metal ONLY occurs in 4th it is most likely a gearbox problem that needs to be addressed.
