Actually both sides. The transmission needs to come out. So you can repair the problem.
To decide what you need as repair parts first you have to get that transmission out.
That in itself takes some pretty heavy duty tools.
Not sure your mechanical abilities so I'm gonna give you a quick list of things you need.
a 1/2 inch drive impact Gun. rent an electric one if need be. (Impact gun eliminates the need for any special torque resisting tools).
1-1/4" socket. for motor sprocket & trans sprocket.
1-1/2 socket. for clutch hub nut.
if bike is equiped with kick starter will need a 1-3/16 socket. (a 1-1/4 six point will work in a pinch).
may need a puller for sprockets. standard push puller will work.
heres the biggie- clutch spring compressor.
There are lots of ingenious owners on this form I'm sure they can post about homemade ways to make one.
if you want quality feed back you need to post pictures so we can see what you see.
To get familiar with what you're gonna be doing see these postings-- http://xlforum.net/forums/showthread.php?t=1297584

Dr. Dick, Doodads, iron Mike, everyone in fact.. thank you. Wow! You guys are amazing. I have always worked on my bike even when past my (current) ability.. I'm not sure that I have the appropriate space right now. I have a friend who is a Harley guru and he has finally after years of asking for help with various projects given me a maybe.. he must have understood the desperation and he really knows how much I care about my ride. I, for now.. am gonna sit tight and cross my fingers as, I would be a broken man if I got into some real trouble/expense with my bike. He is the only person who I know personally, that I would trust with my bike. So, I am going to check out that link and I will let everyone know what comes of this for anyone else with a similar situation and for curiosity sake. Again, you guys are incredible.. if your ever around the gainesville, Georgia area, please let me know. I will be checking in on this thread every few days and writing about any new findings. Until then...gentlemen, CHEERS!!!
