Default 07 sportster idle issues

Ok I have some issues (but will stick with the bike). I think I may know the problem, but want to make sure that I am not overlooking anything. I have researched this on here (and other places), but the symptoms don’t exactly fit what I have been reading. So starting with the basic info:

• 2007 1200cc Sportster Custom
• Stage 1- BK Outlaw AC with breather kit, Rush slip-ons 2” baffles, Xied’s (year and a half ago)
• Last work done- All Balls starter (4 months ago) with brand new 4 gauge battery cables

Problem – about 2 weeks ago noticed times when engine would run rough when cruising or accelerating. It was intermittent and of short duration. About 3 days ago on startup idle would be really high and would not come down even when ridding it for 15-20 minutes. Only way I could get it back to normal was to shut it completely down and restart (sometimes 2-3 times).

The only temporary fix I have found was a slow start up sequence. Turn the ignition on and wait for the red `key’ light to go off. Then turn on the kill switch and wait for the yellow engine light to go off. Then hit the starter. In 10 years never had to do this before.

I pulled the codes and found some that I have had since the Xied installation:
• PO122 TP Sensor open
• PO131 Front O2 sensor lean
• PO151 Rear O2 sensor lean

The new ones are:
• PO132 Engine running rich
• PO152 Rear O2 sensor rich
• PO374 CPK sensor sync error

Now I haven’t had the time to test the CPK sensor yet (this weekend) and was wondering if there are other things I need to check (besides the usual electrical systems check – also this weekend) . My hesitation on the CPK sensor is that with all I have read the symptoms seem to be; rough idle/running, stalling or no start. There is nothing stated about run away idle. Any insight is appreciated. Thanks

Check your throttle cables. My return cable stretched enough that it was out of place where it meets the throttle body. It caused a high idle sometimes. I was able to put it back in place and adjust the slack out at the throttle.

Does it still idle high with the Xieds removed?

I would also make sure the IAC is clean and can operate freely. I few shots of throttle body cleaner, should clean it up.

P0122
The TP sensor should show a voltage of 0.2 - 0.8 volts when closed, and over 4 volts at full throttle.

P0374 The CKP should put out an AC voltage.
Engine must be cranked for more than five seconds without CKP signal to set P0374 code. Intermittent TMAP wiring or sensor issues may cause P0374 codes to set prior to setting TMAP codes.

Just an FYI, the Throttle Position Sensor (TPS), Temperature Manifold Absolute Pressure
(TMAP) Sensor and Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) all share the same 5 volt circuit. A problem with one sensor can effect the others (and may be reported as a code for another sensor )

Consider checking for intake and exhaust leaks (intake leaks can definitely lead to idle issues). Also, 2007-2009 bikes are notorious for having issues with the system relay causing all sorts of weirdness, (they are supposedly sealed, but corrode on the inside).

I wouldn't give too much time to the CPK code unless it persists. I've seen a lot of different things sporadically cause that. But, it might be worth going through the entire harness (especially for the engine sensors) and checking all the connectors and pins for corrosion. Also keep an eye out for pinched wires.

I might also temporarily eliminate the Xieds to ensure they weren't problematic.

Thank you both for the tips. will go through those and I did change the relays already with no change. Let you know when I track down the issue in case others experience a similar problem.

I have a 2007 xl1200l it started running rough but i found if i switched it off after a few miles and restarted it would run ok. Then it some times it would not accelerate properly no fault codes stored.
I could not see any thing wrong but i removed the tps and squirted contact cleaner into it and operated it a few times refitted and no problems for the last 10 months.
