They had what is basically a differential drive system for the tracks, as well as individual brakes for each side. With the differential system it would not put any strain on the off side track in a turn. The single side braking worked just like farm tractors which have a brake for each rear wheel that can be locked together or operated separately. Locking up one side brake will turn the tractor around at the end of the rows in its own length.
I don't know if the half tracks had it or not, but my 4x4 tractor also has a differential lock foot pedal on the right side foot rest plate, that locks the rear wheels together and defeats the differential if you get in a slick spot and need the extra traction. It all becomes learned muscle memory after a couple hundred hours plowing. You don't even think about it.
