How much money did they save in the long run by trashing the cast steel shock bracket used prier to 1973?

My 73 broke the frame.....

in 1974 Squaky Deneaux in Charleston tried to not fix it......Malcolm D. Kemp was one of my best friends.....and an attorney...and a hard core car/motorcycle/gun guy who forced the dealer to fix the damned thing....

Do you remember what part broke. I wonder if the cast steel bracket was all that much stronger. The weakness I see is how they mounted the 73 bracket to the vertical down tubes. The Cast bracket was attached to whole circumference of both down tubes while the 73 is welded on top of the tubes. Did the bracket fail or the attach point of the bracket to the tubes? That is why I'm curious of where your frame broke.

Early 73 XLH

NO triangle brace

Broke at top tube and vertical tubes where the plunger seat would have gone on 72 model.....my 77 XLCH bracket is not centered properly so a 16" tire rubs a stock fender on the right side...too much trouble to repair....did not know this until bike was well past warranty

And the cast steel bracket was much stronger....never heard of a failure on those

That makes sense. Those are the areas where cast bracket had 100% contact with the tubes. I will look at adding support to those areas.
