Default Land/Cabin Ideas?

Thinking about a possible land/cabin purchase in the land of potatoes. Looking for feedback/ideas. Remote is good. A few hours from a city is OK. Cheap is best. Any ideas? Best places to look?

Just Idaho or would Western Montana be good? The reason I ask, is that I think you'll find things cost much less in Montana and you'll have a much better selection.

My younger brother lived in Mountain Home. About a 1 hour east of Boise. I only visited once.

This was decades ago and I don't know how cheap or what.

I lived in Boise for 11 years and now I've been in Sandpoint for 6 years.

Idaho is really three population areas:
Eastern Idaho - Idaho Falls & Pocatello & to a lesser extent Twin Falls
Southwestern Idaho - Boise/Nampa/Caldwell
Northern Idaho - Coeur D'alene & Sandpoint

In between these three areas, there's not much in the way of population. In many ways it feels like three separate states.

In the center of the state is a mountainous wilderness area, with no roads. All around the periphery of that is lots of remote places and thick woods. The whole Panhandle area is thick woods too. But the east and southeast sides of the state, as well as the southern corridor, are pretty much desert.

This state is about as red as it gets. Maybe around Boise it gets a little blue, but not everywhere else, and overall we're pretty overwhelmingly red. People really don't like or trust government very much. Lots of firearms ownership, too. It's an open carry state. Relatively low taxes. Not much population. My kind of place, obviously

It's hard to argue with this advice. Montana is a really big state without much population. And it's freakin beautiful.

I live about 20 miles from the Montana-Idaho border. You couldn't go wrong in an area like Missoula or Helena. If you want to get more remote, there are tons of small towns in the woods. I drive through Thompson Falls a lot, just as an example, that whole Clark Fork River valley is just amazingly beautiful.

Keep in mind though that we get winter up here in the great north woods. Sometimes I even have to brush the snow off my truck before I can go somewhere.

Also consider North Central Washington State near the Canada border. You can find nice land/cabin deals or cheap acreage and build your own.
Nice rural areas near the towns of Oroville and Tonasket.
Myself and several friends each own 5 acres with hunting cabins in the area.
Hannarealty.com is a good place to start.

I grew up in Washington, and still have family there, and I spend a fair amount of time there (mostly fishing).

It's got a lot of great qualities for sure, and a lot of beautiful country, and yeah, north central is great.

It's just become too blue for me. High taxes and lots of government. Seems to happen in any state that has large population centers.

But I definitely like to visit. There's some great fishing up and down the Columbia.
