Default XR mutt in-progress photos

Warning - long post follows:

Before reading any further, please know that the photos are of my VERY rough mockup. The bike is a far way away from actually being a functional motorcycle. Also, please know that this a mongrel. It is not a true XR, nor can I really call it an ironhead any longer

I started with an '81 ironhead to build into a vintage race bike. I planned to focus on chassis mods and a conservative engine build for reliability. The conservative engine build went out the window when a met an older guy who loves fabrication, had some XR stuff, and has a wife making him clean out the garage.

I kept the '81 bottom end. plugged the 3/8" stud holes, and (carefully) drilled and tapped the deck to accommodate 7/16"-14 studs (the XR studs travel all the way from the cases through the rocker boxes, making engine removal necessary for many things). The cylinders are not stock iron XR1000. The seller's best friend, now deceased, made them at his machine shop after hours many years ago to XR1000 dimensions. They were unused with a rough bore when I got them. I had them sleeved and used them as the template to drill the stud holes. The only actual XR parts are the heads and pistons. The rocker boxes were handmade by the seller and use IH internals. On an XR, you adjust pushrod clearance in the rocker boxes, through eccentric rocker shafts. These don't do that - I will have adjust clearance IH style, with collapsible pushrod tubes and adjustable tappets.

Before too much critique comes my way - again, please note this is a rough draft and a lot more work is necessary. I'm just proud to show what I've done so far. This is being built for vintage roadracing, but I'd like to be able to put it on the street someday if I get sick of racing or want to sell it. Therefore, I'm trying to retain space for a large enough battery to start it. I was also planning to finish it in XRTT bodywork (Airtech sells it for the right $$), but I think I like the stock tank.

I just ordered some Red Shift RS505 XL cams in XR1000 spec. My friend is rebuilding the IH crank, using stock 9:1 XR1000 pistons (nothing higher compression is available anymore though they show up sometimes on eBay), Evo Sportster rods (the dimensions are the same as XR1000 rods), and Evo crankpin. There's a lot more I could ramble on about but this post is already too long. Thanks for looking.

What is that Lathe in the background...it seem completely opposite or do you have the carriage moved all the way to the right?

That’s an old Logan. Yes, the carriage and tail stock all the way over to the right. I can’t remember why. I might have been cleaning and oiling the ways.

Looking good Scott. You posted this in the XR section, I would think most here understand and would do just what you are doing....Anything you have to, to get to the track! No apologies or explanations why should be needed. Keep us posted on the progress! Way to go!
