Default Tire pressure

3.25-19 front tire, laced alloy rim and 400-18 rear, laced alloy rim. Running factory recommended 24 psi front and 30 rear. 24 seems pretty low to me, any advantage to run higher pressure? Just curious what others run.

Ive been filling mine to 30-35 up front and 35-40 out back. Always a little more air in the back. This pretty much applies to all my bikes.

Ive heard that the tire manufacturer ratings are higher as a ploy for increased tire wear, truth? who knows.? There are advantages to running higher pressures though.

Riding 2-up obviously needs a few more lbs in the tires.

Tire need to be aired up to last and wear evenly.

Low tires will wear irregularly and even cup if not fully inflated.

Those low factory pressures are for old bias ply tires on crap roads at no more than 40 MPH.

I run 36# and 40# rear (43# 2 up)

Any less pressure a the front will flatten out under braking and wear the outsides of the tire.
Rear tires will cup and wear funky with low inflation.
With low inflation the bike will wander and squirm around and may not want to turn in.

Go with the tire manufacturers suggestion to start with. HD's numbers were for TM Goodyears of yesteryear.
Tires are designed to run in a specific heat range. Under the recommended pressure the tire will heat up faster and go higher. Too high and it basically destroys the tires integrity. It wears out much more quickly.
Over inflation allows the tire to run cooler but reduces the contact patch and thus reduces the tires grip. Read slipperier.

Bear in mind ambient conditions. What's perfect when the track temperature is at 45 degrees will fry your tires when it gets to 100 degrees.

And if you do break the rules and pick up that fat chick for a ride - put a few more pounds in to compensate for her pounds.

Oh. Buy the absolute best tires you can find. Plastic rim protectors might sell for under a hundred bucks but the cost to your health and well being is on the line here.

The difference between a well shod bike and "No point in checking my tire pressures as they are 20 year old Chin Shens anyway" is night and day.

And your lap times will come down.
