Another minor detail for you. The rear foot pegs weren't on the lower shock mount like yours. They were mounted on a yolk that bolted to the frame. The right side peg was spring loaded to keep it up when not in use. You can see it in the pic. They show up on epay all the time. Part 52702-59
That's a shot of my '71. The pipes, clamps and heat shields are all original. I put reopo mufflers on it just like your doing.
And as the Doctor stated, that front clamp is installed to the lower motor mount bolt below the front heat shield. You're missing the front shield.

The #3 clamp in your diagram.... front clamp from header pipe to frame appears to be installed to the upper motor mount bolt.

Normally that front clamp is installed to the lower motor mount bolt.

Good to know. Unfortunately, this is related to my aftermarket front exhaust pipe. I knew it was not stock when, shortly after I bought the bike, I noticed the pipe was touching the frame at the upper point where they cross. I asked about it here and learned there is a flat spot in stock pipes. So, after a little C-clamp and 2x4 pipe bending, my aftermarket pipe has the appropriate flat spot and no longer touches the frame. But it turns out that one more difference is how the pipe curves back toward the muffler. It lines up perfectly to use the clamp on the upper motor mount, but the pipe is a little too far back to use the lower mount location. I might play with it some more and see if I can bend the clamp a bit to make it work. Or I might just live with it. Meanwhile, I have added the front pip to the list of parts I will keep my eyes open for.

Very interesting . . . I've seen photos showing foot pegs in both locations. Is it possible there was more than one official mounting method? I ask because I looked at the 1972 accessory catalog, and it has this photo on the cover:



It isn't a good photo, but it sure looks like the rear foot pegs are mounted just like mine. I checked the parts catalog, and couldn't figure it out there.

You have good eyes. I actually have a front heat shield, along with the original 65431-72 connected dual California-quiet muffler and pipes the bike was purchased with. The rear heat shield fit my rear independent dual pipe fine, but the front heat shield doesn't fit. I suspect it's another symptom of the aftermarket front pipe being shaped slightly different than the stock pipe.

I found the foot peg kit in the parts catalog #50907-69a

Yeah, I saw that but couldn’t tell from the diagram where it attaches. I can’t figure out from the diagram where the pegs attach to the other mounting method, either.

The peg support screws on to the lower shock stud.
The other mounting bracket mounts under the frame.Follow the brake linkage back from the left side and just above the grease fitting there are two bolts.The bracket mounts there.These are engine to frame mounting bolts 3/8-24x2 1/2.

Thanks, that makes sense. So I guess the pegs I have mounted on the lower shock studs were probably that way from the factory, or at least it's an appropriate location. I can see where the other mount would be more comfortable for a passenger, though.

You are correct.Shock stud mounted pegs were a factory location.
