Hello all, thought I’d post up about my progress.

After installing the 44 pilot jet and shimming the needle, the bike runs a lot better. Still a bit of backfire through the carb for the first few minutes after a cold start, but soon goes away. I’ll probably try a 45 or 46 pilot, and try rocketmangb’s plug suggestion and see if that helps, but it’s getting close. Runs wonderfully once warm.

Just to give you some additional food to chew regarding an ignition upgrade:

Here's the Sportsterpedia section on the VOES that explains the concept and value of the upgraded ignition (such as the Ultima) that allows the VOES to choose between two ignition curves...

In later models, a MAP (Manifold Absolute Pressure) sensor replaced the VOES for even greater (more pinpoint) control of the ignition timing for various engine load conditions...

That is definitely some info to chew on, and I’ll be sure to give it a slow think as soon as I have time. Right now I’m just busy trying to undo 17 years of neglect on this poor bike. I’m showing it some love, though.

You had me at "Converted to points ignition" I. Can't. Even.

Took me half the thread to catch that.

Good Luck!

My suggestion: go back to stock ignition, and try the mods suggested within. Newer technology is rarely worse. Even with the stock ignition, I often had to make mixture changes in Western New York, throughout the year.

At this point I’ve checked the timing, replaced the points/condenser, rebuilt the carb, adjusted the idle mixture up to 4 turns out (still no black smoke out the exhaust). I’ve replaced the intake seals both on the heads and between the carb and intake, and WD-40 sprayed around the intake does not change the idle speed. The diaphragm on the slide is old and stretched and needs a bit of gentle coercing to get back under the cv cap, but responds well when air is fed into the port on the front of the carb. Regardless, I’ve ordered a new diaphragm and slide along with a 44 pilot jet which should be here tomorrow.

The backfire goes away when I open the enrichener a bit, and it gets better as the engine warms up.

Anything I’m missing here?
