Default H-D Horn Kit Installed

I know I have seen a couple of threads about horns, mostly replacements for the stock and also the Stebel Horns. I had decided to go with the H-D "Cowbell" style kit part #69112-95D. I figured others might want to know my experience, especially since the kit fits 92 and later XL883 H C L and N, XL1200L N and R.

The horn IS loud! I am betting not as load as the Stebels, but it will get people's attention. My neighbor across the street certainly noticed while I was doing some testing!

Installation went pretty smooth (and I am just OK with mechanical stuff). Since I have a 2008 XL1200n, I had to go through the process of discharging the fuel system, removing fuel tank (need to get access to wires under the tank), disconnecting battery.

To my surprise, the bracket for my system actually mounts to two holes in the cylinder heads!
Also a surprise, these two holes had Torx bolts in them, but nothing attached?!? I am thinking H-D has other accessories that mount to these points, maybe?

Anyway, the big bracket between the cylinders is the mounting point for another funny shaped bracket that then mounts to the cowbell via a double-studded rubber mount (uuhhh, let me guess....vibration dampening?)

Kind of an interesting engineered system. But, hey, it works and the horn may save my bacon at some point. Got to be better than the little "meep, meep" disc that is stock!

Completed system looks VERY similar to my neighbor's Wide Glide, but definitely sits lower and a little further out than his. The new horn is definitely louder than his, too.

Good write up.

I used one of those kits to change to a side mount horn. I used a round cover from Adjure though, and swapped the black bracket for a chrome one. I sold all the unused parts from the kit to various people, and made back most of the original cost of the kit!

I'm not sure which particular part, or parts, you mean, but in any case you can get all the bits as spare parts from Harley.

But surely, if you have a 2005, you already have the bracket? The one between the heads, anyway.

Are you looking for the part of the bracket that holds the enrichener knob to the rear, thereby allowing the side mount horn to be fitted to the centre of the bracket between the heads?

One of the first mods I put on my '02.
Horn has a lot more authority instead of the wimpy 'eep-eep'.
Also fills in the space on that side of the engine.
The '02 only needed the chrome bracket and horn. The rest was already there.
