Default Sportster Camshaft Degreeing ?

I know the nuts and bolts of the process but what about cool tools to help the process ?
We are in the process of modifying a gear cover so we can retain the cams and still see the timing marks on the cams as well as mounting a degree wheel outside the gear cover and mounted on the #2 Cam.
Seems as though some Andrews produced cams aint exactly tits on to the specs and that could cause some changes to the cylinder pressures created as well as the power band of the engine.
Say the cams are retarded 4 degrees from spec and creates a later intake close point we lose some cylinder pressure and makes it harder to make boom boom on an otherwise very good engine !
Or they are advanced 4 degrees and makes really good pressure but the engine detonates and wont make power upstairs where it should ?
I know Hammer has touched on this in the past but is the only correction to move the gear on the #2 Cam ?

Or am I just making too big a deal of this ?

Being able to check and keep track of such data can be useful .

How are you going to do it?

I can only relate cam timing to what I have learned while playing with hot rods.
Advancing cam timing helps the bottom of the rpm range and retarding it will help the top end. Your "visible" cam cover will allow validating the base line and documenting the process. I need to spread some rep before I can give this thread some but it deserves it.
This is an area of modification that deserves some experimentation and exposure.
Joe

plus 1 jolly rogers.

I run retarded in the 4* range and it shifts the power band around 500 rpm upscale. why, I did not want low end I wanted top end. this is very touchy since too much or too little have issues and can have zero effect also.
there are several ways according to how the cam is. the press on gears can be moved, the keyed gears can use offset keys (with mods, the old Chrysler keys can be used) and of course shifting flywheel.
another reason, when I drop 4th, my reduction goes and fifth now is like an over-drive and I lose 500 rpm so I am tit for tat so 4th has to be stretched to redline.
will see if I can dig up the process used.

Hammer was gonna retard the cams in the Mule and found they were retarded out of the box.
I want to check mine and see if I can find another 10 psi cylinder pressure

I'm super interested in this topic and was wondering how degree wheels were attached, and how much degreeing is possible because of cam gear teeth???

Found this on hammer site http://www.hammerperf.com/ttcamgearmove.shtml
