If the solenoid operates it is likely good.
Excessive current draw through the solenoid due to, weak battery, bad cables, or a starter that draws too much current will cause the solenoid to hang.

You can test this by disconnecting the wire to the small terminal and bridging from the positive to the small terminal. The only other thing that could cause it to hang would be if the return spring was not pushing the plunger back.

Look for heat, if one of the cable is very hot or the battery voltage is low, very easy to check.
Charge the battery overnight with a Battery Tender [tm] and check again.
Or jump with a car battery if the starter cranks a bunch faster the bike battery is not keeping up.

Solenoid operates fine, motor turns over well with starter. Was unsure what should have a path to ground and what shouldn't. Seems that is good. I think my problem is in the regulator. Will see if the terminal has moved and grounded again, then bench test it again. Once I solve my ignition wiring issue & get power back to coil and points I cn then check regulator when running.

Meant to say think problem is in generator.
Will charge overnight as suggested.

All electrical problems should be tested with a fully charged battery.

Don't leave a small battery on a regular charger overnight. It must be a maintenance type charger that will float the battery voltage at 13.6, this tops off the battery without making heat. Prolonged charging at a higher voltage will boil a small battery.

Maybe your regulator is bad. Same sort of thing was happening to me a few years back so replaced the regulator. Everything is good now.

Charging system checks are in the technical stickies.

Diagnosis before buying parts....

Took the generator out again. Didn't find an issue with terminals and it ran well on the bench test. Put it back in, again turning over well but no spark. Checked all the new coil and points wiring but no issues found. Fitted a spare set of points I had and she runs, strange that.
Failed the generator max output test. Tried it a couple of times, 11v then 16v.
So generator is bad it seems. Connected regulator, red light on when lights on which makes sense if max output is low.

How do the brushes look, and the armature where they ride?
