Default What Years Actually Fit the 1990 XLH?

If there is a link then I must have missed it. Sorry bout that.
-Continually I see that parts are suggested/listed for 1986-2003 only to find it not the case etc, for my model year ('90).
-So, what actual model year will work on a '90 for parts etc.
-Will '91 parts; '95; '2000?
-As you know the parts seem to be getting slim and I was just wondering if the later model years would work?
-Hopefully this will open up the search field.
Thanks,

All parts have their range of compatibility - not all the same...

Each year, the MoCo replaced some parts with newer versions... So you have to ferret out which years fit what based on when it was first implemented & when it was later replaced with another upgrade...

Here's a chart in the Sportsterpedia that lists some compatibilities - Others can be found by looking up (in the Sportsterpedia) a particular section that describes an item and seeing what years are mentioned as functioning the same...

1990 and earlier are 4 speed transmissions, after that, a new case design and 5 speed transmission.

All the frame and assorted parts (fenders, tanks, seats, etc.) are the same 1986-2003.

It's not that difficult if you do a little research.

Thanks, I was getting thrown off on some things especially the seats whereas they would say a 2003 would not fit my 1990. It would have to be a '90 to fit etc.
I wanted better seat options for example. So besides the drive-train, everything else should work/fit up to 2003, well, beside s sissy bar-LOL.
Good to know.
Thanks again,

It's not quite that simple...
Here's the Sportsterpedia section on fuel tanks...
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...y02#fuel_tanks

Is it a 2.25gal? a 3.25gal? a 3.3gal? Is the petcock on the right or left?

With various fuel tanks, the seats were made longer or shorter to match the tank size...

This is just one example of how changes over the years may affect what is compatible...

Fenders --- 1986-1993 used a fender support that was not part of the frame - it was curved...
--- In 1994-2003, the fender support was part of the frame & and it was straight...
This means the fenders have different mounting holes between these various years...

As with many things Sportster related, you can modify things to make them work - or combine things even though they were not intended to work together - and you may be satisfied with some parts together that are not specified as compatible because the MoCo didn't like the asestetics of those together, even if functionally they will work together...

Unless you don't mind spending money to 'find out' if stuff works together, you will need to do some research to see 'WHY' they are not designated as compatible - then make your own assessment of whether using it is acceptable...

Thanks, I was figuring such after looking in to it more.

Just might get a springer seat to fit my bike and easier to find from a newer model yr.
