Another thought is that when cold there is every chance the filter will be in by-pass mode
and all the tiny bits are being carried around for a while until the oil gets hot enough to pass through.

Kept the old filter because I was wondering the same thing.

Thought about that too. I figured oil and a filter is cheap insurance. After the first 100 miles I would think most of the carving is done. Get that crap out of there.
