I was surprised how quiet the valve train on mine was stock and it still is with the .551's. I was expecting clatter with the .551's but there isn't any. Beats me why. Maybe the QC of the lifters has improved? Mine's a '17.

Could just be a tolerance thing. You got some combination of things that left it nice and quiet, while most didn't? Maybe the 551s are just really bad at handling the normal tolerance ranges and only like certain numbers. Seems weird that that grind is one of the only ones people report being obnoxiously noisy on a regular basis, but I wouldn't put it past a HD part to have weird tolerance related issues.

I doubt I found a "magic" combination that doesn't clatter. I can believe Harley is getting lifters from a different source. The oft repeated comments about .551's clattering are pretty dated. This is the internet where such things get repeated and repeated and repeated...

They were pretty widespread back then, the noise complaints, and you dont hear much because honestly until now I haven't heard much of anything about anyone new running them with all the other options available today.

Considerable amount of money to go nowhere. Should've kept the W cams.
Stock stage 1 1200, stock W cams with CS slip ons max torque 78 max power 84.
With the Patriot Defender max torque 77 max power 87.

Way faster? You lost torque and gained a couple HP. And not from the cams!

You're now our internet expert? I don't see you posting any actual results for your "better" choice.

Guess that means we're both deaf 'cause the internet says they clatter, or clattered...

What exhaust and tuner are you running? Your AFR walks around quite a bit and goes very lean at high rpms.
