06 XL1200 VSS freq is: 1624

That's an 04 P/N. The speedo will be accurate on either the 04 or 05 1200 bikes, but I can assure you that if used on an 06, the speedo will be WAY OFF!
What is the gearing difference? I thought the '06s had:
US: 38/57, 29/68
HDI: 38/57, 30/68
the same as '04 - '05?

Thanks for the replies everyone. If anyone with a 2004-05 is interested, I listed it in the classifieds. Just looking to unload it for what I paid. http://xlforum.net/pp_classified/sho...1&cat=4&page=1

Lurch ... Since you already have that 04 module, how about just sticking it on your 06 and reporting back here how it worked ... nothing gained, nothing lost

It's a 2 minute job ... you may or may not have to do the "ICM Initializing procedure", but that's easy.

I have an 06 and just put one of these on my bike. To say that the speedometer is WAY OFF is an understatement. It acts like a tach under heavy acceleration through the gears. up, down, up, down. Hit the throttle from a steady speed and it starts jumping up faster than it should.

Does anyone know why it throws the speedometer off so much on the 06 models?

I installed p/n 31785-04A on my 2006L a couple of weeks ago. Great performance, but the speedo is WAY off. This is frustrating. Awesome performance, but cannot stand the inaccuracy. It took me a half-hour to password learn it to the bike, just to have this happen.

I found the correct ignition box, which happens to be discontinued by Harley. This ignition box is specifically for the '06, and the p/n is 32471-06. This is a plug and play box, with NO password learn procedure required. It took me less than 5 minutes to make the swap, fire the bike up, and ride away. No more detonation, speedometer reads correctly. If you do a Google search with just the part number, there will be a few dealerships from around the country who still have this ignition in stock. It is $119.95+ shipping/handling. Very happy with the results.

Great...so I am screwed too. I picked up a 31785-04 over the winter for my 2006 1200C and tried to install it last night..and of course it went into password mode and wouldnt start.

Having read this thread, it appears that it won't work! Or if it does... I am going to have other issues. Big waste of time. Any ideas?

My season is short enough without wasting time playing with this thing.

I wonder if anyone else makes an high performance ignition box... other than HD?

You know you have to run it through the learning procedure, right?

You should be able to get it to work, depends then whether you can live with the speedo reading a bit wrong. It wouldn't be hard to calibrate the speedo using a cheapo SatNav and mark up the glass.
