Default using q quart of oil every 200 miles

I have an 81 Ironhead and it started using a LOT of oil, 1 quart every 200 miles. there is no dripping oil, there is only a little bit of smoke, just a bit, and yet its guzzling oil. about 11,000 miles on the bike. I did let the oil run low down once and it overheated. Now it guzzles.

Any and all suggestions on how to find and / or fix the reason for all the oil being used is appreciated.

I am not quite ready to pull the heads and send them out for a valve job, but will if I have to, I'd rather try other things first,

thanks for your help

Get a cheap endoscope for cell phone and look inside the cylinders. Scratched cylinders can lead to crank failure and $$$

Oil should be dripping out of exhaust ports at that rate.

there is no oil dripping from the exhaust pipes, the exhaust ports are dry but are more carbonized that most bikes I have seen, but thats it.

Do a leak down test. https://r.search.yahoo.com/_ylt=AwrW...PZpGAbCDYfIGM-

I just rebuilt my top end because i was getting excessive oil coming out of my blow out hose above my transmission. When i took the top end apart, my rear cylinder (top piston ring) was in pieces. So my compression was going into my case and blowing out the excess oil. rebuilt the top end and fixed that issue.

Yep, a compression test might be helpful.............

over heated air cooled engine can destroy the rings, relaxes them so there is very little tension to the wall.
leak down is the best way to go as it tells you where it is going.
also, a glazed bore will slip oil by.
