Cut out Issues XL1200 2001
Hi
New to the forum and HD’s plus I’m a Brit 😂
Recently bought a 2001 XL1200 that had apparently been rebuilt from the ground up. Have plenty of pics to show
The issue is once the motor gets up to temp it’ll pop a lot on decel and the cut out
Wait a min and it’ll fire right up and go a few miles further.
Then do it again
Things of concern I’ve found and done so far
Fuel tank vent / overflow was blocked off and deleted cap was none vent type
Both sorted
Some lose grounds all sorted
New plugs
Checked for air leaks all good
For some reason I have an engine temp sensor that’s disconnected, from what Ive read 2001 models didnt have one ?
Bike runs aftermarket filter KN
Has LAF drag pipes ( they are going )
Ignition is points and dual fire believe this is stock
Tinkered with idle and air mixture found the screw was missing its o ring so replaced with new and EX-Just
Up at temp it idles what feels like really low so upped it a little
Replaced tank as discovered it was rotten inside loads of rust particles
Got nothing else ???
Suggestions
Pretty certain its not fueling now
What else could it be

Sounds like you need to go thru the carburetor, possible junk in the float bowl. Clean as required. Alcohol or PJ1 Super Cleaner work well.
Note what jets are installed.
Keep the idle up.
Points are not stock.
Read up on your bike, engine, ect. here... http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...cal_categories
And send pitchers...

2001 would have electronic ignition and not points. i would look into what you have for ignition tho it sounds like you have other problems.

Its a 2001 XL1200
So should from specs be dual fire
Not single
That was apparently only the S version
Odd parts are, why does it have an Engine Temp Sensor? It shouldnt have on unless the engine has been changed ?
Coil is new on build apparently
I was looking through ignition changes to a single fire setup
Anyone done it?
Just need to get to the bottom of the why its doing what its doing
Its in with a carb specialist next week
Oh and how do you post pics
Tried to but keeps giving errors ???

The points will work, with the correct coil. You have a mixed bag, will take some research to sort it out.
Look into the "Iron head" section for more info... http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/techtalk:ih:engctl01
Be sure the battery is fully charged and in GREAT condition. And a easy coil test... https://youtu.be/Y8n1fBkDaCQ

My '98 1200s occasionally cuts out when decelerating, grab a handful of clutch, switch key off and back on fires right up and runs fine without stopping. Not yet enough of a minor irratation to bother with trying to figure it out. Runs like a raped ape, love it.
