Matte black will make it less noticable. When using the factory one you also have the standard (metal) support on it to hold the fork legs together. Not as much as a special fork brace of course, but surely noticable between this one or none at all.

Well, it's been a while, but that's mainly because I have been riding it :-) I've done about 1,500 miles on the bike and am still making a few tweaks here and there.

Since my last post, I did modify the stock front fender to help eliminate the concern about flying debris on the motor. I picked up some Rox 2" risers which really put the handlebars in a good spot. I bought some Kuryakyn adapters to drop the driver pegs down 2" (which also brought them out a bit). A couple of visual items are the handguards and painting the panniers black.

The bike handles and rides very well on the road. Those Fox shocks are fantastic at handling bumps (I still need to replace the front forks with progressives). The riding stance is very comfortable for distance riding (highway pegs make a big difference).

I'm very pleased with how the bike is coming along. I'm planning to circle Lake Michigan the end of October for an Iron Butt on it, and also hoping to squeeze in an early November trip to New England weather-permitting. Needing to put some miles on the bike to see what comes loose/falls off/breaks before it's big trip to Alaska next summer.

I have gotten quite a few compliments on the bike, which is always nice. A guy on an Street Glide rolled up next to me at a gas station and told me he didn't realize Harley made off road bikes. I told him it was just a Sporty I was working on, and he said I could have told him it was from the factory like that and he would have believed it...

Anyhow, here's a shot I took of it.

Font fender looks great! You need to get someone to take a pic of you sitting on it to see how your chain is setting, so you have a mental image of it. Great Lookin' bike! If it performs as good as it looks you'll have the perfect package.

Kudos to you on a nice looking scooter.
One of my earliest Saddle Sore’s was a Lake Michigan loop, started and finished in Lansing, Michigan. Only negative part of the run was having to get through Chicago. Have never had an easy run through that city, and no avoid it like the plague. Good luck on yours!

For a trip like that and added protection have you considered running handguards? Either making some that would fit 1" bars or perhaps converting to fatbars? I am planning on converting to fatbars at some point but it is quite a pricey conversion for the riser set Im looking at
