But I think he was right on the money when he said "it's not the fuel pump, it's the fuel pressure regulator that's the problem", which is part of the fuel pump assembly. He also mentioned HD Tech Tip #328 and posted an excerpt from it which fixes the low fuel pressure that the faulty regulator is producing.

My bike was occasionally having a hiccup in the first few minutes after cold start. It also was only getting about 40 mpg consistently, city or highway. Yesterday I went to the dealer and had them install the service kit from Tech Tip #328 and I could definitely tell that it runs a little smoother which stands to reason if the fuel pressure is too low it doesn't atomize as well as when it is sprayed into the cylinders at a higher pressure. When they got done with my bike I filled it up for the 100 mile drive home and my fuel mileage went from 40 mpg to 51.25 mpg and this included drive 80 mph for 50 of the 100 miles that I drove. Jury is still out on the hiccup but so far so good.

Do you have any details about what the parts they installed were for tech tip #328?

I'm very curious. We really don't have much of a stumble...but we DEFINITELY have crappy mileage!

Kev

Kev - Do you have the tools to check the fuel pressure on your bike? You could just check and see if your getting spec (from memory 55-62 PSI).

No high pressure gauges in the box these days, but yeah, I'm starting to wonder.

FOLLOW-UP QUESTION for 2007Low...

What oil bag temps were you seeing before and after the fix.

Hi Kev, sorry I can't give you temps, don't have a gage. There is a p/n for the kit they put in my press reg, check out this thread, oops this website won't let me post another URL, I'm too new, anyway I went there and got the kit p/n, here it is, 61005-07 this will be under warranty if you can get them to put it in for you, my dealer did.

Unfortunately poor weather here in Minnesota, won't be able to ride for quite a while it looks like.

Started the bike an hour ago to see how it acts on another stone cold start and it still stumbled one time. I waited about one minute before I gave it a little rev and as I said it did cough once. Just curious, aren't these bikes supposed to run on a fast idle when doing a stone cold start for the first few minutes? Mine doesn't, it hunts just a little but just barely noticeable and seems to be running at a pretty normal idle speed. Wonder if the ecm needs remapping after fixing fuel pressure, I know they need it for airfilter and muffs? Thanks

You know what, I'm gonna start a separate thread for this conversation, please check it out.
