Default XR-1000 restoration guide?

Hello,

I have a 1984 XR-1000. it is in more then decent shape, but she is showing her age. SInce I retired, I have more time on my hands and would like to spend some of that time putting her back to original condition.

Can anyone refer me to a Palmers type guide for this bike? Something that would tell me the proper finishes and fasteners for my bike? I am the third owner, and the previous owner(s) polished some stuff that I think should have remained as cast and I do not know if some of the black paint should be gloss or flat (handlebars for example).

Also, minor stuff like what type of clamps should be used for the fuel and oil lines (regular hose type clamps, oetiker or ???

Thanks for any guidance.

Ride Safe

there were only about 1700 of these bikes produced in the 1 and 1/2 years they were built, so finding any type of reference material for these bikes will be hard to find. The owners manual were specific to all Sportsters, with a little addendum for the XR1000.
Good Luck with your search, and if you do find anything, let us know.
I have a few old articles when cycle world did a test on the XR1200, I'll look back and see if I have anything that's relevant to your search.
Regards
Roy

This guy seems to know pretty much everything about XRs, mostly the 750s, but won't hurt to ask some questions. Check the literature section on the site as well.

Yes, they were not produced for enough years or in enough quantity to leave much useful information. I drove the bike over to Daytona for bike week a few years back and even dealers were asking me where I got the twin carb cylinder heads from. In all the years that I have had the bike, I have not seen another one (except in pictures).

Nice video. Thanks for sharing.

Your bike sounds quite a bit throatier then mine. I have the stock exhaust and just put the supertraps back on. Mine sounds more mechanical.

I had a set of two into 1 pipes that exited below the bike on the right side and I sold them years and years ago for reasons that escape me. I would really like to find another set of those pipes now. Those high pipes have burned many a hole in my left pants and legs.

I may get bold and fabricate a set of low pipes one of these days.

My bike sat for about 7 years while I was working and traveling quite a bit overseas on business. When I uncovered it, I discovered that the tank has a leak or something on the left side that has bubbled a bunch of paint off. I cleaned / flushed the tank and refilled it and there are no leaks so I do not know what the story is with it. now the challenge is to blend in new paint if I can even find it. Mine is slate gray. I have a very small vial of factory touch up paint for it, so maybe I can get a good match. The joys of owning an 'old' bike.

There were just a few factory options you could get for the XR1000.
One was a 3.3 gallon gas tank, a passenger pillion seat, and a high performance 90 hp upgrade kit which, I believe, included pistons and camshafts. There were also the option to buy the racing mufflers which didn't have the baffles like the stock mufflers do.
I have the racing mufflers on my bike, and that's why it sounds a little different than stock.
Regards
Roy
