It's not that an extended tip plug needs less advance and more that a lawn mower plug needs more advance.

The difference is just a degree or 2, it's not reduced as much as a dual plug setup.

An Ironhead combustion chamber is a very poor design and that is why it needs more advance. Anything you can do to improve that will require less advance.
The extra advance is needed because the piston dome divides the cylinder and blocks flame travel.
The down side of that is that the increased advance puts you closer to detonation, it narrows your tuning window.
It increases the susceptibility for detonation because the cylinder pressure rises before all the fuel gets lit.
And remember the piston is still rising as that fuel is lighting.
Throw in high ambient temps and a tank of bad gas and BOOM! you fall outside your tuning window.
