Out riding before the end of September... Overcast but warm...

Had to stop and take a shot of these brutes.

I guess they were looking forward to their Saturday Night Date and didn't really appreciate my stopping by their out of the way pasture to take this picture!

I was out for my first ride in October. Less than a week ago the daytime high temperature
was in the 90's. But today it was in the mid-60's. It's amazing how the cold jet stream
crosses Canada and brings us Fall Weather.

I planned to visit some covered bridges in Lancaster County. This is Forry's Mill Covered Bridge
located east of Marietta. It is of the Burr-truss design, having a span of 91'6" and a width of 12'8".
It's red on the outside, white on the entrance faces and unpainted internally.

I love these old bridges!

Although it wasn't really warm, it was a nice sunny day. The soybeans and the field corn are still in the fields,
but very near to harvest time. I also passed a number of pumpkin patches and roadside stands, offering for sale,
gourds, corn shocks, flowers and, of course, pumpkins.

I enjoy the cool Fall weather, colorful sights and clear, dry air.

I visited four bridges in all - This is the Shearer's Covered Bridge located in Manheim in the Memorial Park.
It was first built over the Chiques Creek in 1847 and rebuilt in 1855. Many bridges were initially placed
too low to withstand recurring flooding.

In 1971, the bridge was moved (about 4 miles) to this spot with only pedestrians crossing it to access
other parts of the city park.

This is one of the few covered bridges with horizontal side paneling.

There are over 100 pictures from riding this year at My Motorcycle Chronicles web space.
You can read the rest of the story there.

One more image from my ride over the weekend:

Here's a wonderful view north looking up the Susquehanna River.

The first TMI reactor went online in September of 1974. On Sep 20, 2019, that surviving unit was shutdown to permanently close the nuclear power plant despite having a license to operate thru 2034.

An estimated 600 full-time jobs will disappear along with the 1200 contract jobs that recurred whenever fuel rod replacements were scheduled. Also disappearing is the 800,000 kilowatts of generated electricity.

The reactor rods will be safely stored on site until the bulk of the decommissioning process of Unit 1 is begun in 2078.

Out riding on Monday - I put another 150 miles on KT...

I visited PenMar Park and the High Rock Overlook:

By the end of the day, my odometer turned over 30,000 Smiles of Miles...

And I hope there are many more such enjoyable miles ahead...

Good for you Ken, seems like I keep finding excuses for extended rides, ie. 100 mile run for an ice cream and 150 mile run for a slice of pie. Just keep doing it!

That's some fantastic scenery.
I like seeing the old bridges too, especially under construction.

I was out riding again today - Temps in the low 60's...

I happened upon this old road grader. It would have been pulled along behind a large, steel wheeled, steam tractor to level gravel roads. I don't know what brand that is, but I've always been amazed at the engineering skills of the industrial revolution manufacturers.

More riding today - Cool but not too cold - Mid-60's

I rode for about 150 miles in the Maryland countryside.

One stop was at the Loys Station Covered Bridge located on Old Frederick Road just off of Rt77 near Rocky Ridge:

I stopped by another covered bridge and then headed for Rt15. I rode north to Gettysburg.

I stopped by Battlefield Harley-Davidson - They had this cool XR-1000 on display:

It was another pleasant day rambling thru the countryside on KT.
