Rear lower right corner near speedo drive area. Most of the areas have been suggested with pics earlier in this post.
Take note of the upper corners of the rear motor mount as well. There are areas known to crack around there too. Not the end of the world, but good points for a buyer to point out.

P.S. Don’t let on that you have this forum for backup on your rebuild. He doesn’t need to know you have a cast of thousands in your pocket to guide you through it. The more it looks like a complete disaster in an incomplete package, the better off the buyer!

Went to see the bike with a friend who knows ironheads. The seller is a good guy, wasn't trying to push me. We took the cam cover off, bushings were shot, rear exhaust bushing had a ridge on the edge. Front cyl cams had loose pieces of shim, not good. Rollers were loose in followers. Intake ports were totally rusty, water got in. We talked about 72-72 being limited to .030 over so he offered to remove heads to check piston markings. Couldn't get rear cyl off, he rounded off one head bolt, but front cyl was a total mess - intake valve must have been open. We did clean the piston and it was only .010 over, but this is way too far gone for me. There have to be many more in better shape for the same money. We didn't even talk price, but he said he had some wiggle room but wasn't going to give it away. Told him he may have to. Looked around his shop - nice FXR he rides, another ironhead chopper project, another ironhead bobber project, tons of FXR and ironhead parts everywhere. We exchanged numbers and if something better comes along he'll let me know.
