Default Starter killing my battery.....

I go to push my start button yesterday and got a quiet click then absolutely nothing. Battery voltage had dropped down to 4 volts. Got home from work and battery had juiced itself back up to 12.8v.

This morning I go to push my direct solenoid push button and its not making any contact and it feels floppy. It kills my battery voltage as well down to 5v.

I need a new starter Im guessing?

I still haven't replaced my battery with the cracked positive terminal but this suddenly happened yesterday.

How old is the battery? Battery life declines very quickly, seemingly overnight, when the battery is no good anymore.

With a known damaged battery, the first thing I would do is have it checked. Fully charge it then have it tested or test it yourself on the bike for voltage drop while starting. Check both ends of both cables for wrench tight and inspect for corrosion.

Since you also have a push start on the solenoid, I'd check it for corrosion as well, it doesn't take much.

This sounds like the internal high-current contacts are trashed - broken - burnt off - and allowing the button to flop around....

Disconnect the battery terminals - remove the battery for safety...
Remove the back of the solenoid and have a look....

Cranking the engine for longer than 3-5 seconds at a time and cranking the engine with a low battery WILL heat up/destroy the starter...

The system is engineered to operate with a fully charged battery. If the engine isn't starting determine why and fix it.

I've got a situation with my 883 not starting and am amazed that the battery still performs as it should after quite a bit of cranking the starter. Got the battery from these guys...https://www.wholesalebatteriesdirect.com/

Remember that the battery cable to the solenoid is direct - it does not go through any switches or fuses - meaning if it has any type of short internally (or externally) it will drain the battery just sitting in your garage....

This is part of why I suggested you pull the rear cover off the solenoid and make sure the internal contacts & wiring are all properly in place...

Personally, I would do that irrevelant of changing the battery...

I took the selenoid push cover off. Nothing looks burned or broken. But the plunger goes in further without feeling any resistance. It feels like I could pull it right out which it might be able to do I dont know.
