Angry 77 xlh starter clutch removal

Alright folks, I have been through the threads, through the Haynes manual and I am still havIng a problem replacing the starter clutch. I've got the left hand thread retainer off, the part behind that is off, so now I'm to the starter clutch and can't get it out. What's the deal. The manual says it should just pull out but the bearing is hitting the clutch gear.does the solenoid arm need to.come out first? Beautiful weather and this problem is grounding me.
Thanks

remove the battery, notch the bottom of the battery tray to remove the bolt that holds the arm in place, remove retaining pin, cup, spring from arm, remove bendix gear.

You most likely need an impact driver, the kind you hit with a hammer, to remove this bolt. I would not try to remove it just with a screwdriver.

Alright, feeling pretty dumb/annoyed. Got the solenoid arm out but can't get the starter clutch past the clutch basket, tried this from another thread but still cant get it out. Any other suggestions or clarification on the instructions below?
To remove the pinion..
Move the shift fingers out of the groove on the shifter collar by moving the end of the shifter lever forward.
Then remove the pinion assembly...
