if you have the old style pawl carrier assembly (used until '71) that are notorious for getting gummed up over time.

Good question. I have never opened up the transmission so I am not sure. What would be an indicator once i get in the transmission that might be the problem?

For troubleshooting purposes try gently tapping on the end of the shift shaft to see if it frees up.
Try tapping with lever up and down.

Before tearing into it, spin the rear tire with feeling.
It may have shifted but the dogs are not engaged and the wedged dogs have the shifter in a bind.
Rotating the rear wheel backwards smartly may get the dogs to drop in and unjam the shifter.

Chevelle, DR Dick and everyone else that helped me ...THANK YOU! Tapping on the shift shaft did the trick. The sucker went right into third after a few good taps. Is this something that might turn into a problem down the road? Thanks again!

change your oil/primary fluid changed regularly, and if you haven't been inside the primary, it might be a good idea to have a skid shoe for the primary chain on hand to replace the old one...

Funny thing is I just changed the oil right before this happened. The primary shoe and all clutch components are all new. I replaced almost everything on this bike at one point or another minus the generator and carb. Thanks for the advice! I am just glad I didn't have to tear into the tranny.
