It's interesting that many say the real capacity of the tanks is under 4.5 gal.

That tid-bit might save a long and painful push one of these days.
Sasnak75,

In 2016, I did a “run it dry” test using my ‘15 XL1200CP. See post #97 in this thread for details.

Given that I’m not doing Sturgis this year, perhaps it’s time to do another test.

I just rolled in on what I thought was fumes and the bike only took 3.5 gallons. I thought for sure I was going to have to call the wife this time.

I'm going to guess and say 40 miles. Either my Super Low doesn't have a 4.5 tank or the light came on sooner than only a gallon left. Manual says around 50 miles I think.

No, I mean: how far had you gone, on your 3.5 gallons?

I coasted into the pumps a month or so ago. 192 miles, but I didn't reset the trip meter until a few miles down the road, so probably 195-196 miles, took 4.12 US gal, bottom of fill tube on the side stand.

The big problem with the EFI tank is the location of the fuel pump being mid ship, sitting in the seat, the rear will set lower, so that extra is just not able to be used. No telling if all of the fuel pickup locations are the same, either.

Volume of the pump and needed air space at the top usually are not used in the "capacity" calculations, but you can have a rounding up of numbers. Then there are manufacturing tolerances.

There is also the issue of the accuracy of the station pump and the ground surface slope, etc.

And there is also the tripmeter not 100% accurate. After I changed over to a Koso meter I noticed I lost some range however I calibrated the Koso meter to my actual speed based on speed cameras and Garmin GPS so believe the trip is accurate.
