I'd hook a light bulb (or similar small load) across the battery terminals and let it mostly discharge. I wouldn't "fully" discharge it.

I only have pics of the Shorai batteries but it looks like just below the battery posts there's a seam where the case was assembled/glued together. I'd cut (carefully) thru or just below that seam.

Start on a corner. You can make a couple small cuts looking for a thin area. Cut a little and see what you've got. Repeat as required. Then cut all the way around the case. The bottom part of the case will (hopefully) separate.

Just cut carefully, barely going thru the plastic of the case.

Should be interesting.

Well, I promise to do that, just want to focus on priorities, getting my bike on the road again. This sounds like a fun experiment to expand our understanding. I see Shorai recommends fully discharging battery for recycling, so might as well, probably donate the results to the auto shop at my school. They've already got way too many examples of lead/acid batteries to show the students. A new, shiny object.

Sounds good, first things first. My priority would be getting the bike running and the break-in process started.

My faithful AGM died after 8 years and I found this thread very helpful to weigh up my options.
The original 87-94 oil tank design doesn't handle the weight of an AGM long-term and ends up
cracking the oil tank. Plus that is some serious overall weight saving. But 8 AGM years versus
5.5 lithium years for half the cost is still a big price difference. Maybe I would have also wanted
to fit a new Cycle Electric regulator to be on the safe side or a voltage protected lithium battery.
I would have opted for Lithium if I hadn't already done the tank and battery tray upgrade on my
88. The new Motobatt tests at 380EN CCA. The old Motobatt when fitted was 410EN CCA.
Motobatt prices have gone up about 20% in eight-years. Lithium has come down about 30%.
Dare say it will be Lithium next time.
