Have your battery load tested. It could have a bad cell.

AND, don't just check the connections (i.e. look at em). Make sure they are clean on the unerside, make sure the CABLES themselves are ok (test them with an ohmmeter when disconnected, wiggle them, see if resistance spikes).

I am having some of the same problems! clicks when I try to start it so I charged the battery and got it to fire. It was running crappy on one cylinder and backfiring. I have a new coil, battery, and spark plugs on it. Its seems like when the bike starts to warm up it dies. I was told if a stator is no good it will cause this. I tested the stator and was getting 15.5 ohms and zero continuity.

My '07 883 did it a couple of days ago. It had been turning over slower and slower and then one day I ran to the bank and when I tried to start up to go on to work everything went blank when I hit the Start switch! Pissed Off!
I reached under the left cover and push around a little. Tried again and she started up.
Got to work and worried about it for the rest of the day. After work it started up and when I got home I shut it down, pull the left cover and checked the relays and fuses and everything looked OK. I tried to start it up and bam! same problem.
Pulled battery and the negative post bolt/screw was not tight. Been there before with alot of trucks, so I figured that was it. I put a charge on the battery overnight and installed the next day making sure everything was tight and what a difference! Lots of juice, fuel pump runs smoother and the bike starts up with just a touch of the Start switch.
I assume that I was not getting a good charge with the loose bolt and it finally loosened up to the point where I lost power to the starter on start up.
Like Kev said,START WITH THE BASICS.

Have I just been spoiled by bikes that are built better than my Harley? Don't get me wrong, I love riding it much more than the Goldwing or Boulevard. But if it doesn't start, I can't go for a ride.

This morning, I got suited up, uncovered my bike, rolled it down the driveway, and all I got for my efforts was "click click click". Wtf? My other bikes sit during the worst part of the winter, when we have snow for 3-4 months, then start right up, even though the batteries aren't hooked up to a tender. My Harley hasn't been ridden since Thursday, yet didn't want to start this morning.

So why isn't anyone outraged that they paid at least $7-10k for a bike with electrical issues? I'll go home and check all the connections, then I'll rewire it all properly. I was under the false impression that quality at HD has improved over the years, but this is bullshit. Yeah, I'm pissed. Between the weather and family obligations, I only have so much time per week to fit in a ride. And I'll be spending today's riding time troubleshooting a starting issue, unless I want to ride my Suzuki instead.

This sucks.

Yeah, I hear ya, BrianRides!
I really like my XL883, it's a nice bike and all. Looks great, sounds great and fun to own.
But I have twice the miles on the DR650 Suzuki with hard rides on rough roads, in the rain. I've dropped it four times and have had it totally covered in mud, and it just keeps on running without a burp!
The Sportster is a solid, well built bke, but I just don't trust it for a long ride.
I am planning some rides into Wyoming this season and I would love to take the Sportster, but lately I have decided to plan the trip with the DR650.
The price I paid for the XL883 could have gotten me a pretty good Adventure type motorcycle(DL650 V-Strom) but with the DR I thought I'd give Harley a try
Dissapointed? Yes. Am I going to sell the Sportster? No Way! I just like the bike enough to put up with the problems. It's a toy that I do not wish to part with.
But this will be my one and only Harley Davidson. To each their own, I guess!

First let me say this has been a helpful thread and I've learned a lot from it.

So here's the background. I have 1.5 years of riding experience under my belt but still pretty green when it comes to the tools. I ride my sporty almost every day year-round except when there's snow on the ground or if it's below freezing. I've never had any battery issues in the past. I don't use a battery tender because I park outside and that spot is about 30 feet from my townhouse.

Friday morning I got on the sporty, turned the key, lights came up, flipped the kill switch to 'run', hit 'start', nothing happened. I tried a couple of times more, no luck. I noticed that at this point the odometer LED was dead. At that point I had to give up and find another way to work.

I took the time to read through this entire thread and refer to my service manual as needed. I checked the connections & wires and all seems well there (wiggle test). Fuses are good.

Next I tried to charge the battery a bit by hooking it up with jumper cables to my car. I saw the lights on the spedo turn on so I shut off the ignition on the bike and I left it connected for about 20 minutes with the car still off. I then disconnected the jumpers, turned the key, no lights.

I reconnected the jumpers, got lights, flipped the kill switch to 'run' but didn't get the EFI noise (uh oh...). I hit start for the heck of it. The engine turned once (and sounded quite asthmatic) and stopped. The odd thing is that right after the one turn, I heard the EFI sound.

I then turned on the car wondering if that might help. No change. One asthmatic turn followed by the EFI. A little frustration set in and I held down the starter, which got me a sequence of 3 asthmatic cycles.

So the battery is probably dead. But since I can't get the bike to start while hooked up to the car battery, does that mean I have other issues as well?

Thanks everyone.

Trying switching the 2 relays and try that again.

Also inspect the relays and terminals for corrosion as a possibly source for what might have killed the battery in the first place.

I think it would be worthwhile to fully charge the battery before further testing - get an extension cord, or remove the battery.
