Default NGK spark plug heat range question

I purchased a 97 xl1200 sport. It has an S&S Super E with a Thunderjet installed and Paugcho Upsweep exhaust. When I got it, it was running a little rich so I decided to try and rejet it.

It originally was Interm: 28, Main: 68. I started with changing the interm first. I went down ONE SIZE to .0265. spark plug shows engine running lean. Then I kept the interm .0265 jet, and then went up ONE size on the main to 70. Ran it around, spark plug shows lean still.

I was getting confused, so I went back to the original Interm: 28, Main 68 just to start from scratch with better knowledge than I had started with. It idles steady and is smooth through the RPMs. No backfire. Plugs show that its now a little too rich. Isn't powder carbon, just black. The electrode was a lighter black and no carbon on it.

I'm using NGK DCPR7E (#3932) spark plug, with a gap at .040. s&s states open drag pipes will make tuning carb more difficult. Well....it is. I'm coming to the conclusion that with my pipes, I'm just gonna have live with running slightly rich.

Any thoughts or tips? Could a hotter spark plug balance out the fuel mixture???

with open pipes you have to tune to one setting and thats that.. you're not going to be able to balance out the bike properly because drag pipes are for wide open throttle the whole 1/4 miles.. Not for torque around a turn.. you can try fixes like lollipops and cones and other snake oil.. but for proper turning you're going to need a proper pipe..

are you running stock cams as well ?
you can try and see if a different plug with the bike will do anything different, but i think you're just chasing your own tail at that point.

so to answer your question, i dont think you're going to benefit from a plug change.

What do you mean "one setting"?

I'm not sure, I haven't checked those out yet. I don't think the PO changed much of the internals of the bike.

Correct me if I am wrong with this thinking. But, would a hotter plug thats 1 heat range hotter compensate for the extra fuel (rich) and make the engine a bit leaner?

You only want to run a hotter plug if they are fouling from a "too rich" condition. If you run a hotter plug to correct the "rich" condition, you take the chance of detonation and pre-ignition. It will not, necessarily, "lean" it out. So, if they are not fouling, you should be good. If you want to lean it out, you'll need to re-jet and put some backpressure in the pipes.

most carbs have several settings that can be tuned to...

idle, part throttle, and full throttle.

depending on which pipe you have and how it reacts at different settings will determine how one sets up a carb..

with straight pipes, your only option is a wide open setup.. t hat's the one setting I was referring to.

perhaps the thunderjet needs tweaking.
the two circuit carb is known for the issues you have.
