Default The Dreaded Base Gasket Leak

Hello all! I haven't been on the forums in awhile. I sold my 1977 Ironhead last year and been riding an 84' Shovelhead Low Rider since.

Trying to help out a neighbor who just acquired a 97' Sportster 1200 for his daughter. When he brought it home the rear base gasket was puking oil.

I helped him replace the base gasket. Followed the "torque wrench method" found here http://www.nightrider.com/biketech/h...rquevalues.htm

We cleaned the gasket surfaces well.

Still leaking but not puking like before.

Tear it back apart for another new gasket or are there any tips here? I made sure to let him know to WARM up these Evos good before thrashing on it.

Thanks for the reply Dave.

Unfortunately I have no idea. He purchased the kit from the local Indy. It definitely is not a genuine HD gasket.

Not much help there I know. From the little research I have done the Cometic MLS is good stuff...

Well, cometic has specific instructions on install and torque. Using any other method guarantees problems. You should be able to see the head gasket. Factory will be paper. Cometic will be three layers of steel. You may be able to see the rivets that hold the layers together .

Yes George but you have to replace the head gasket to replace the base gasket. And you know about cometic torque procedure. Also rivets interference, and not using the o rings.
