Default Ok, talk slowly and use small words LED tail lights

I've been looking at LEDs to replace my turn signals. Safer is better. And (honestly) I've read a lot here. But I remain confused.

I still bump into ads that claim "plug and play"but then add they "MAY" require a load equalizer.

Now some ads leave it at that. A few say 2014 and up do not for their lights.

Since I have a 2014 I am, of course, hoping that no load equalizer needed is universal.

So, did the 2014 model have a fundamental change that negates the need for a load equalizer?

If not, how do you tell in advance?

All sportsters 2014 and later are CANbus.

On CANbus (Controller Area Network bus) models you won't need a load equalizer but you will need to make sure the bulbs are CANbus compatible. CANbus systems need to communicate with the bulbs. If the communication is broken it will assume the bulb is out.

The BCM (Body Control Module) monitors many power functions on the 2014-later CANbus models. It takes the place of the TSM (Turn Signal Module). The BCM monitors the current draw of the various lights in order to determine if a bulb burns out (or has a bad connection). Many of the stock light bulbs themselves are the standard incandescent versions (varies by model).

See this section of the Sportsterpedia related to the 2014 models:
http://sportsterpedia.com/doku.php/t...asic_functions

The BCM can 'LEARN' the current draw of the bulbs you are using, whether you have incandescent, LED or other style bulbs.

After the 'LEARN' function, the BCM will monitor the bulbs expecting that level of current draw and will indicate a bad bulb or connection if there are changes in the current draw from when the bulb was 'LEARNED'.

Summary: You should not need load equalizers on 2014-later models.

Yikes, how to over complicate a basic system

Many things after 1994 began to be 'more complicated' in order to meet regulations or add 'features'... Up thru 1994, many of the changes were actual fixes or true upgrades to problem areas of the design...

Still - once the vibration factors are accounted for, the systems are generally reliable... Even the grenading spring plate is usually avoided - because folks either don't ride the bike more than 5000-10000 miles in 10-years or they baby it as stock with no power upgrades...

Between all the XLForum riders (a very small slice of the total owners), the members here provide some of the most thorough test rides that Sportsters will get...

Probably why I have grown to love my 93 Factory Stock 883 that I bough t a few months back...only 2500 miles, had been at the back of a shed all its life after year of use..rusty and tatty as hell but a simple joy to ride. I have started enjoying my riding again after years of hassle with the 04 bike

Thanks to all. The Sporty I owned before was pre-canbus. I'll make sure to read the Sportsterpedia on the 2014.
