Default Paint Code for 1976 Sportster

Anybody have information on paint codes for a 76' Sportster? Interested in a local custom paint shop re-painting my bike in another original H-D color that was available on 76' Sportster's using modern paint that is currently available.

Interesting question: Why doesn't the H-D parts catalog list paint??? Don't the dealers stock paint??? Even rattle cans???

My ride is 'black', but whose I don't know. After 37 years, I expect it's been repainted several times.

Because they covered paint codes in Parts and Accessories Bulletins instead.

Black is Black. Very little color shade difference. For example- blue has a million shades.

Back in the 80's, I owned a 1975 Trans-Am, which I repainted with the black & silver color scheme of the 75th anniversary Corvette (but flipped). I used a new [at the time] paint from Dupont called 'Imron', a two-part catalyst activated resin-based paint system. Imron black left a smooth and visually 'wet' finish that was hard and scratch/impact resistant. Five years later it still looked wet and like just-painted.

If I were to strip the tanks and fenders of my Sportster, I would re-do them in black Imron.

Another way to obtain an original color sample is to look for a NOS AMF Spray can in the color that interest you. Although the paint can has most likely lost its aerosol pressure, you can use the "Cap" for a near perfect color match.
